"Striking" Novelty Puppet!

This Match Puppet with moving mouth is the one remaining novelty puppet in my collection that was created by Randy & Laura Huckleberry (IL). Their clever creations were featured in the Maher Studios catalogs of the early '90s. The match puppet is 22" tall with a cute open and closing mouth (which works from a control on the back). The idea for a match puppet was suggested to me by Jim Ellis who at that time used "Mickey the Match" in his health, safety, and environmental shows. The puppet you see here will be offered as one of my give-away items at some point this month - I just haven't scheduled the time and date.

  1. Who is the first to use a "found object" type of puppet, such as the match shown, and some of the things you sell where you install moving mouth, eyes or other features?

  2. On second thought I guess the Toby Jug and Talking Cane were two of the earliest of this type puppet.

  4. Making opjects "talk" actually predates ventriloquism (as we know it) itself. Forms of puppetry with "talking" masks, for instance, were performed in Asian cultures many centuries ago.

  5. Hello and Happy Holidays, I wondered if you had any other photos of this Hot Puppet? Close up of the face mouth area and a back one to show the finger levers? Thanks, : )

  6. I'll look for a closeup photo of the mouth. The control is actually a ring that you pull. It's located about two-thirds the way down on the back side.

So is the main form made from solid foam or something solid and covered with felt? Pretty creative. Still looking for that just right partner.... ????
The ones I like don't like my check book!

  8. The match "stick" is a length of PVC pipe.

ok, so now I'm thinking. Not sure how long it will last though. Been using PVC for several things around the house and theater props.
If I only lived in the big city with craft stores for materials...
