From Doug Preis:

In the event that there are any kids out there that aren't afraid of clowns...or ventriloquists...
Here's the perfect character to help cement the deal...
Peculiar design choice, eh?
I'm guessing not a lot of repeat kid's birthday party shows...

This kind of "dark" humor has always upset me. Just like the "Chucky" figure from a murder horror movie. I have run into a number of adults that still think that vent figures are "creepy" from someone's misguided use of puppets when they were small or seeing a horror movie using puppets. I guess it is one of the things that we have to deal with as Vents but I am not sure how to handle that other than using soft sculptured, and foam puppets with lots of fur.

  3. I agree with Jim, it is a shame that ventriloquists and figures have been portrayed as evil in movies and on TV. I too use mostly soft puppets for children's shows. It is also a shame that clowns are depicted as evil, as I child I loved clowns and Vent figures like Jerry Mahoney, Charlie McCarthey, and Danny O'Day, there was nothing evil or threatening about any of them, or any of the early TV Clowns Bozo or Clarabell.

At the risk of being beaten about the head and shoulders, I'll submit this question to the readers of this blog. How is this character different from "Achmed" the dead terrorist?

  6. That's a good point. It all depends on how the figure is used.

I don't agree I am a clown and learning vent. I see adults and children with terror in their eyes running away, as a clown I do walk around or strolling. I haven't seen a vent do that most of the time I see a stage show and there is a safe distance between the folks and the vent,so there is a time to adjust and comfort level developed as the act goes on. I have done birthday parties where someone acts with fear but by the end of the party or show they like the clown and are friends. I don't like the dark use of clowns or vents but it is something we have to deal with and hopefully they will see that we love to entertain and bring joy.

Both ventriloquism AND magic have taken a severe "dark" turn in more recent years. With vent, it's been thanks {IF that's the word to use} to Achmed, which i've NEVER liked, & think came WAY too soon after 9/11, & i know for a fact some people who lost family in that tragedy were not amused by achmed in the least! With magic, it's happened via Chris`angel & others of his` ilk. & with clowns, it's due to people like steven king & his novel & film "It", & others of HIS ilk. I just have to wonder what all the great vents of yesteryear, who used puppets to entertain, not frighten would think. I think most of them would say, as i do, Sorry, but i'm not impressed!
